What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractors treat the neuro-musculoskeletal system. The treatment is directed at joints that are not moving appropiately, resulting in maladaptive changes in the spine and nervous system.

A specific, controlled thrust is applied to the joint to ‘reset’ neural mechanisms and allow the joint to move and function better. The adjustment is low amplitude meaning it is quick, but not forceful. Often the thrust is no more than a bicep/tricep flick.

During an adjustment, you may hear or feel a small 'click' or 'pop'. This is not your bones cracking, but simply due to a gas bubble forming within the joint fluid. Immediately after the adjustment, the joint should feel less painful and have improved range of movement.

Not everyone wants to feel their joints click - at CH Chiropractic, we adapt the treatment to the individual patient. If you would prefer, Claire can use alternative methods of treatment to give you the most comfort.

What can Chiropractic treatment help with?

Chiropractic treatment has been scientifically demonstrated to be effective for complaints of the musculoskeletal system. Treatment by your chiropractor can relieve pain – including neck and back pain – headache, altered sensation, muscle stiffness and spasm. The treatment can also increase mobility, improve function, and reduce or eliminate the need for drugs or surgery.

Chiropractic can help with conditions such as:

- Headache

- Joint pains

- Back and neck pain

- Hip and knee pain

- Migraine prevention

- Sciatica

- Shoulder disorders

- Elbow pain

- Rotator cuff injury

- Muscle spasms

- Minor sports injuries

What should I expect during my first Chiropractic treatment?

Claire will start with a detailed history including your medical history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and previous treatments.

She will move on to a physical assessment which may include an orthopaedic or neurological examination.

Following the history and physical examination, Claire will explain her findings and give treatment recommendations based on your preferences.

Treatment consists of spinal adjustments, soft tissue work, stretching, massage, and may include rehabilitative exercises.

At the end of your treatment Claire will give aftercare recommendations such as stretching, cryotherapy, or ergonomic advice.

What should I expect after my first treatment?

Mild aches and pains are normal after your first Chiropractic treatment. It is unlikely that the treatment will make your symptoms worse, however, when it happens, it is usually short-lived.

It is important to contact your Chiropractor if you experience any adverse effects or have any questions about the treatment.

It is recommended to have frequent follow-ups for the first month of treatment to monitor how your symptoms change and ensure the best outcomes.

How many treatments will I need?

The time it takes for your symptoms to change will depend on your general health, as well as physical and psychological factors.

Lifestyle factors such as smoking, hydration, diet and activity levels are important too.

In general, people experience a difference within 2-6 treatments. If your complaint is chronic or recurring you may require preventative and/or maintenance care.
