Debunking 10 Common Myths About Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care has been a topic of discussion and, at times, controversy. Despite the numerous patients who have experienced relief and improved health through chiropractic treatments, several myths continue to circulate. Let’s take a closer look at ten common misconceptions about chiropractic care and set the record straight.

Myth 1: Chiropractic Is a Rough or Aggressive Treatment

Truth: Many people believe that chiropractic adjustments are harsh or painful, but this is far from reality. Chiropractors are trained to deliver precise adjustments. The adjustment is low amplitude meaning it is quick but not forceful, often no more than a bicep or triceps flick. Discomfort is usually mild and very short-lived, followed by an immediate sense of relief and increased range of motion.

Myth 2: Chiropractors Put Bones Back Into Place

Truth: The idea that chiropractors simply "put bones back into place" is an oversimplification. Chiropractors utilize adjustments to improve spinal function, not just reposition bones. The goal is to restore proper movement and function rather than merely "fixing" misalignments.

Myth 3: Your Spine Is "Misaligned"

Truth: The concept of spinal misalignment is a misnomer. Your spine is made up of 24 vertebrae connected with discs, ligaments, muscles and tendons. Each joint within the spine has a very small range of movement but put together make up a very flexible and mobile structure. Our job is to identify individual joints that are not moving appropriately, causing dysfunctional changes in the spine and nervous system. The treatment aims to restore normal movement and function to the spine, which in turn decreases pain and improves mobility.

Myth 4: Once You Start Treatment, You Never Stop

Truth: The goal of treatment should always be to go back to normal function with the least amount of outside intervention possible.  Treatment plans are tailored to individual needs depending on the patient and their health goals. Some may choose ongoing maintenance care for wellness, while others may only seek treatment for specific issues. Your treatment plan may change if you have chronic or recurring issues which suggest an underlying problem that needs to be dealt with through rehabilitative exercises and regular treatments.

Myth 5: You Need X-rays to Properly Understand Your Problem

Truth: X-rays are NOT required for chiropractic care. Chiropractors are extremely well trained in assessing and diagnosing neuromusculoskeletal issues without the need for outside referral or imaging. X-rays are used rarely and only when clinically indicated.

Myth 6: Chiropractors Have Less Training Than Physiotherapists

Truth: Chiropractors in the UK complete a four- or five-year Master of Chiropractic program which includes in-depth study of anatomy, physiology, pathology, biomechanics, imaging, diagnosis, research and neurology to name a few. They also spend a year during their training in a clinical internship treating patients of their own. In fact, both chiropractors and physiotherapists have specialized training, but their approaches to care differ.

Myth 7: Chiropractic Isn't Safe

Truth: Chiropractic care is safe and effective when done by a qualified professional, backed up by numerous studies. Like any healthcare treatment, there are risks, but significant complications are rare. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate patients thoroughly and identify when treatment may not be appropriate.

Myth 8: Chiropractic Care Is Only for Back Pain

Truth: Although chiropractic care is commonly associated with back pain, it can also address various conditions, including headaches, neck pain, joint issues, and more. The treatment can also increase mobility, improve function, and reduce or eliminate the need for drugs or surgery.

Myth 9: Chiropractic Isn't Evidence-Based

Truth: Chiropractic care is supported by a growing body of research demonstrating its effectiveness for various conditions. Many studies highlight the benefits of chiropractic adjustments for pain relief and improved function. Chiropractors often incorporate evidence-based practices into their treatment plans.

Myth 10: Chiropractic Care Is Not Covered by Insurance

Truth: Many insurance plans in the UK cover chiropractic care. Coverage can vary widely, so it's essential to check with your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits.
